Dr. Janine Blackman, MD, PhD

Medical Director & Founder

Dr. Blackman is a uniquely trained expert in the fields of nutrition, hormones, and natural medicine for disease prevention, optimal health, and longevity. Dr. Blackman founded Your Hormone Doctor, Inc. with the mission to provide personalized expertise in hormone optimization for people to achieve optimal health and to live strong, sharp, and vibrant at every age.

Dr. Blackman is Board-Certified with the American Board of Family Medicine, and is a member of the Institute of Functional Medicine and the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. She devotes several weeks annually to courses and perpetual study in the areas of hormones, nutrition, digestion, brain health, & longevity. Dr. Blackman’s practice is devoted to natural, custom-compounded, bio-identical hormone replacement, including thyroid, adrenal, and sex hormone evaluation and treatment for both men and women. Treatment programs also include nutritional and life style recommendations, with the mission to restore and prevent the causes of disease and premature aging, and to optimize overall well-being.

Different Approach to Medicine

Unlike modern pharmaceutical and insurance-based (purely allopathic) medicine today, Dr. Blackman founded Your Hormone Doctor, Inc., to offer an approach that is different than the conventional models to disease management. She does not prescribe pharmaceutical drugs to manage symptoms or disease. Rather, her focus is on the root cause of symptoms and the essential elements of health to assist the body in restoring itself to optimal function, and thereby, naturally reverse imbalances and illness. Even after decades of dependency on medications, Dr. Blackman’s patients are able to reduce, and often entirely eliminate, all synthetic pharmaceutical medications as their physiology improves as they adopt all the essential elements of a wellness lifestyle through her expertise and support.

Extensive Training and Unconventional Experience

Dr. Blackman graduated from University of Maryland’s combined MD-PhD program. Her PhD is in Epidemiology & Preventive Medicine, during which she researched the risks and benefits of synthetic and natural types of hormone replacement therapies. She completed residency training in Family Medicine in 2002 and then studied as a full-time fellow in Integrative Medicine at University of Maryland’s NIH-funded Complementary Medicine Program from 2002-2003, including training in bio-identical hormones, herbal medicine, acupuncture, functional medicine and nutrition. She subsequently served as Assistant Professor in Family Medicine at University of Maryland School of Medicine and the Clinical Director of the Integrative Medicine Center at University of Maryland from 2003-2006, when she left to create a private integrative medicine practice in Montgomery County, Maryland.

From 2006-2010, Dr. Blackman worked as the Medical Director and Co-Founder of The Gilbert Clinic in North Bethesda, MD, a clinic devoted to the treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia offering a unique combination of Chinese Herbal Medicine, Functional Medicine, and Psychotherapy. In 2011, Dr. Blackman founded RiverSoul Wellness in downtown Bethesda, offering functional and nutritional medicine, weight loss programs, and natural hormone optimization. The name of RiverSoul Wellness was changed in 2015 to Living Wellness Medical Center with the addition of several staff and extensive anti-aging skin rejuvenation treatments. The expansion and diversification of services became more than Dr. Blackman desired to manage, resulting in her decision to close Living Wellness Medical Center in November 2016 and concentrate on her unique strengths in hormone optimization and nutritional medicine, believing these are foundational elements for restoring and maintaining optimal health for life.

Before Medical School

Born in Lawrence, Kansas in 1960, Dr. Blackman moved to State College, Pennsylvania at the age of 13 with her family. She earned her B.S. in chemical engineering from Penn State University in 1982, and a M.S. in chemical engineering from University of Delaware in 1985. She worked as a chemical engineer from 1985 to 1989, before entering the MD-PhD program at University of Maryland in 1989. She also earned a M.S. in mathematical statistics from University of Maryland during her studies for the PhD in Epidemiology.

Life Outside of Medicine

Dr. Blackman has lived in Maryland for over 30 years, where she raised three children, along with numerous dogs, cats, and many other creatures. Her two younger children are currently college students Maryland. Her eldest son lives with his wife and son (with another baby on the way) in Montgomery County. Her daily self-care practices include meditation, yoga, eating a whole-food plant-based diet, observing the beauty in the world and being grateful – including for the hard lessons in life, and laughing or being silly at least once daily. In her spare time, Dr. Blackman enjoys long hikes in the wilderness, preferably with a guide or friend who is a good navigator, as she has learned that navigation in the deep wilderness is not one of her gifts.

The human body will naturally heal itself from almost every problem when it is given the right conditions. In her medical practice, Dr. Blackman assists people with creating the right conditions to not only resolve their health concerns, but to guide them to better health and vibrancy than they previously thought possible. Such vibrancy includes energy, focus, strength, endurance, resilience and flexibility (both mentally and physically), self-awareness, and increased love, consciousness and connection with others, nature, and the world.  Dr. Blackman
